exploring your community through a community of practice

Keeping with the theme of exploring our community through a community of practice, I would like to initiate a discussion on the possibility of linking schools through this network where eco-clubs in schools can have contact with similar groups in other countries to encourage sharing experiences and ideas. Teachers and EE practitioners involved are welcome to brainstorm the subject as to how feasible such an idea would be. We probably will have to consider quite a few things such as the logistics involved, access to computers (especially in rural schools), students time etc.

If there are teachers, students and practitioners interested please enter into this discussion. Better even, if anyone would like to become the first school looking for a partnering school, please join the discussion and let hear how feasible this can be. Elna de Beer

HI Odirilwe,

Thank you for the support on the initiative. Yes I firmly believe that children needs to be involved much more in environmental programmes.

I see you are from Polokwane - what are you involved with there? I know from my involvement with the SA Wildlife College that the environmental issues in your province are quite challenging.

Thank you again for the kind comments and please stay connected via Green Leaves - it is a wonderful network.

Regards,

Elna

Hello All,

I do not have anything very useful to say that would contribute to this discussion, but I must say I like the initiative you guys are making! The good thing about it all is that you are focusing on young children, thus instilling a culture of good practice from a young age. Being a student in environmental studies myself, this kind of initiatives are of great interest to me. Thank you all and keep the good work up!
Excuse my absence, but we were on holidays
Monday will begin the new year school and we will answer soon!

Hi Tina,

Please have a look at the attached file. Maybe we can get our school to school contact going by having the children write a letter to one another. What do you think?

Hello, my name is Karin Vanessa Isaacs and I saw on Green Leaves what you are doing in the school. I am a field ranger at one of South Africa’s National Parks. It is called Augrabies National Park. Ask your teacher to show you a map of the world and see if you can find South Africa. I work with school children in our park and there are many kids in our communities that have never been to a park.

Ciao, mi chiamo Karin Vanessa Isaacs e ho visto su Green Leaves quello che state facendo a scuola.

Slide 2
I would like to invite you to write a letter to the kids that visit our Park and tell them about what you are learning about nature and the environment. I am sure our children would like to learn from you. You can also send us some pictures of what you are doing.

Would you like to do that?

Vi piacerebbe farlo?

Slide 3

Do you visit your Parks? What do you learn there?

Voi visitate i vostri parchi? Là che cosa imparate?

This is a picture of our kids visiting the park. Do you see the bus in the background? With the bus we go fetch the children at their school and then we bring them to visit the park

HELPING OTHERS

AIUTARE GLI ALTRI

In our Park we not only learn about nature and the environment, we also learn to help other people. We help people in our community to learn about HIV, which is a bad disease and we need to teach kids about how to live their lives in a way that they will not get sick.

Slide 5

If you would like to write to our kids, please ask your teacher to help. We in South Africa and especially the kids visiting the Augrabies National Park would like to hear from you and maybe we can get other children who are learning about nature and their environment to also tell us about what they are doing.

Next time I will introduce you to a few of the children who are visiting our park and ask them to write a letter to your school.

Keep well and enjoy learning about nature!!!
How do I say goodbye in Italian. Please teach me!!
Karin

State bene e divertitevi imparando cose sulla natura!!!
Come si dice “arrivederci” in italiano? Per favore , inseghatemelo!!
karin
